Butch Davis told ESPN on Monday that he is leaving the network immediately to accept the head coaching position at Florida International.

An announcement by the school is expected Tuesday.

Florida International fired Ron Turner on Sept. 25 after the team fell to 0-4.

FIU has won only 16 of its past 56 games, dating back to the final game of the 2011 season. The Panthers were 10-30 in parts of four seasons under Turner, who replaced Mario Cristobal before the 2013 season.

Davis, 64, was 51-20 at Miami from 1995 through 2000 and 28-23 at North Carolina from 2007 through 2010. He spent nearly four seasons (2001-04) as head coach of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, going 24-35.
