How long can eggs be stored in the refrigerator past the Expiration date?
Now first and foremost I’m not some kooky socialist who is against farmers making a profit, do not confuse what I’m about to write. The expiration dates on most products are usually “best before” recommendations. Now, there are instances like dairy milk in which, you’d be wise to drink that milk near the expiry date, but eggs, as many people know an egg can last 3–5 weeks in the fridge past the expiry date and up to a year if you’re like me and buy in bulk and leave your eggs in the freezer.
You’ll barely notice the difference. With that said, if you live in an area in which government regulations are minimal or you’re in a small town, there’s a possibility that the dates might be extended because the said shop doesn’t have as much volume as stores in large cities. Most people know that expiry dates are often exaggerated, but if it ain’t broke why fix it, if you’re profiting from it?
If you’re in a major city, chances are the average consumer doesn’t do much research on the expiry dates of eggs and therefore it’s in the companies best interests to make it appear that those eggs will expire as soon as possible based on sales volume. If you’ve ever worked at a food bank a lot of the food that arrives is near expiry or “expired”.
People who know about the expiration date racket know that a lot of this stuff is overblown. The bottom line is if you know what an egg looks and tastes like you’ll know if it’s still good to eat. if it starts to look green or you just feel uncomfortable don’t eat it, take back control of life!
The images I attach to this post are images of what a rotten egg looks like, do not eat an egg that smells or that mirrors the images you’ll see in this post. If I’m, to be honest, I don’t boil eggs often, I prefer scrambled or fried, so if you’re boiling eggs, do a smell test and your own inspection first.
Hope this helps!
